About the studio
Studio Matejka
is a physical theater laboratory exploring 21st century performance techniques that specifically work across borders: Borders between performance genres, borders between training techniques, and borders between individual expression and collective resonance. Through practical investigation, the performers work to develop the strength, agility and dexterity to physically ‘speak’ through a diverse range of ideas, images and vocabularies. Studio Matejka does not work to create something ‘other’ to existing performance approaches and training regimes, rather it uses such established methods as a springboard for pedagogic and creative exploration, charting individual discoveries, drawing out patterns and/or contradictions and integrating these findings into its ongoing work.
Studio Matejka emerged from the work and experience of its founder Matej Matejka and his interest in physical expression and the actor's processes.
We create theatre performances and site-specific projects, give workshops, mentor artistic projects, give seminars and lectures, collaborate on the development of performance material, take part in social and community projects, create short movies with an accent on physical expression or dance.
We strive to break through audience dissangegement and passive entertainment. We stand against indifference in any social, cultural and political matters. We believe the only meaning and survival of the theatre is the real contact and active experience between the performer and the audience, between the community of people sharing the momentum physically and mentally together. We are willingly sacrificing the ethics in order to re-enter experience of the ritual.
Through the laboratory model that seeks to break the borders between dance and theatre, that investigates and redefine the language of the body in the post-postmodern era, we tend to integrate both disciplines into one complex, organic act.
